Carve a first-timer spoon - PEP BB roundwood.sand.spoon

Carved my very first spoon! Used too hard of a wood for a first spoon. Found a manzanita branch on the ground. Took the better part of 3 hours.

Mike is asking me to take a look at this most recent spoon.

I think a short spoon could be for, say, soup ...  or maybe for scooping spice out of something - or coffee from a jar of ground coffee.  But these things all require a sort of bend in the handle (such that the spoon-bowl is a little ladle-esque) or a deep bowl in the spoon-bowl shape - especially on the far side of the bowl.

A longer handled spoon could be pretty straight - good for stirring a pot of soup, but you probably aren't gonna get much soup in the spoon without a bend in the handle.  

The spoon I have been asked to look at has a short handle and the spoon-bowl seems to be missing the far side of the bowl.    

I wonder if we need to add a requirement here for "show the spoon in action".  A small spoon would have to act as a soup spoon bringing soup up from a small bowl of soup that has only a little soup left.

I didn't see a size requirement in the main post. Also, I don't have a hook knife, so this was my best attempt with what I had. The spoon is definitely functional, but maybe my photo angles weren't great.

Could you put that water into a small bowl, and without picking up the bowl, when the bowl is 1/4 full, get just as much water in your spoon?

I guess the thing we are trying to do is to say:   yours is not the first spoon we have seen where we had these thoughts.   So now we are thinking:  how do we close up this hole we left in the requirements?

This time with green wood. Much easier.
This time with an angled handle and deeper bowl.

Ok! After MUCH sanding, I feel like I have a pretty serviceable spoon.

Cut some alder in July, worked on it a little, didnt really make much progress til I got a nice spoon knife for Christmas. Still needs to be smoothed a bit more but for a rough spoon I’d use this. Really enjoyed being with the wood, it’s very light but strong.

Does anyone else find pieces of firewood that they can't bring themselves to burn because it's, like, a really, REALLY, nice piece of firewood? I realized I had never made a spoon before, and this nicely figured and spalted piece split from firewood looked to me like it had a spoon hidden inside.

Ahhhh... I’m embarrassed to show anyone my pile of ‘set asides’ because sometimes it looks bigger than the ‘use for firewood’ pile! I make other stuff besides spoons though, like key holders, picture frames and jewelry boxes. That spoon is amazingly beautiful Jordan! Trying to figure out what kind of wood it is. Looks like maybe hard maple or white oak? Saving it to my picture file for inspiration!
