Here is my submission for adding one horizontal log to a berm/hugelkultur scaffolding - PEP BB roundwood.sand.scaffolding

To get certified for this BB, I am posting pics of:

 - chunks of wood I started with
 - Action pic about half way through
 - Final product
 - Indication of the strength and stability of the scaffold log.

Here's my submission for this BB. I added a horizontal log to a hugelkultur scaffolding at Wheaton Labs during SKIP last summer.

The photos I have from this project show:

 - Your chunks of wood that you are starting with
 - Action pic about half way through
 - Final product
 - Indication of the strength and stability of the scaffold log.  Examples could include:
    - You standing on your log
    - You and some friends sitting on your log
    - Creative alternatives?

I was with a group adding vertical logs to the hugel near the Fischer Price house at Wheaton labs. That's why you will see lots of materials and additional notches being made as there was 3 of us working at the same time.

I used spruce and cottonwood for these support logs. I made corner flat joints (shoulder joint, I think they've been called?) Dez showed them to me for rockjacks. I did sink some bolts into them to keep the horizontal log from rolling off.

Staff note (Jeremy VanGelder) :

Do you have an action shot about halfway through the build?

Staff note (Jeremy VanGelder) :

Well, the first picture would probably be the action shot half way through. Do you have a picture of the logs before you started?

I've never done mortise and tenon construction like this before and I was so impressed by how well it turned out -- stable and level. An existing horizontal log was removed because it wasn't structurally sound, so I cut in a new location on both vertical logs to install the new horizontal scaffold.

The photos I have from this project show:
Attachment 1 - My chunks of wood that I started with
Attachment 2 - Process pic about half way through, the horizontal log I worked a tenon joint into is in the background while I'm cutting in a new mortise in the foreground
Attachment 3 - Final product, including me doing a standing balance on it to indicate its strength and stability
